Description

Chongshan Monastery was originally built during the Sui Dynasty, and was rebuilt in the Ming dynasty because of a fire. The building adheres to Ming Dynasty architecture with a bell tower, a main hall (Dabei Dian), main gate and small side rooms.

On approach, visitors to the temple are greeted by a pair of iron sentry lions guarding the entrance. There are a number of halls, but the main hall is particularly impressive, housing three fine statues: the Samantabhadra (Bodhisattva of Truth), Kwan Yin (The Goddess of Mercy), and Manjusri (the Bodhisattva of Wisdom). The Goddess of Mercy is over 8.5 meters tall and has 1,000 hands and eyes. The monastery also has beautiful illustrated book covers which show scenes from the life of Buddha, and sutras that date back to the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.
