Suzhou Hanshan Temple [寒山寺]

Large View

Description

Built during the Liang Dynasty (502-557), Hanshan Temple was immortalized by poet Zhang Ji when he wrote, "Away from the town of Suzhou stands Hanshan Temple, the chime of its midnight bell reaches as far as my boat". The temple in question, whose goldenrod gate has become something of a local religious icon, is most famous for its New Years celebrations, when Jiangsu residents come from far and wide to hear the temple's 108 bells ring in the new year.
