Description

Shenzhen Museum is a comprehensive and multifunctional modern museum that collects and displays historical artifacts and ancient art. The museum boasts an area of 37,000 square meters and building area of 18,000 square meters. Originally established in 1981, the museum did not open its doors until 1988.

The Ancient Hall is the 'old' Shenzhen Museum displays various antiques in three halls including the Chinaware Hall, Painting & Calligraphy Hall and Bronze and Miscellaneous Hall. The Chinaware Hall exhibits exquisite specimens that date back to the fifth century BC including a green-glazed pot from the Yaozhou Kiln of the Song Dynasty, and a white curlicue glaze and a dragon-shaped handle pot from the Tang Dynasty. The Yaozhou pot is a typical product of the Yaozhou Kiln. The pot is decorated with human figures and boasted as the only specimen of its time period.

The Painting & Calligraphy Hall displays works of top artists including handwriting samples of well-known figures, including Li Hongzhang, one of the most powerful officials in the late Qing Dynasty and Kang Youwei from the late Qing Dynasty. Li Hongzhang is known to have been an advocate of learning from the West, as was Kang Youwei, a late Qing Dynasty scholar known for his role as the emperor's adviser during the Hundred Days Reform Movement of 1898. The hall also displays ''Hand-washing Painting'' by Fu Baoshi (1904-1964), painted in the 1940s. The painting, with unique structure and simple lines, marks the maturity of Fu's skills. The hall houses a thangka, a Tibetan religious painting.

The Bronze Hall displays Shang Dynasty treasures including a ding (four-legged round or square cooking vessel used by aristocrats of the time) with patterns of a phoenix and a cicada, and an exquisite Jue, a wine cup.

The permanent exhibition halls in the museum of ancient art display the historical development of Shenzhen: ancient Shenzhen, modern Shenzhen, and today's Shenzhen. These exhibitions together with the reform and opening-up history exhibition of Shenzhen and Shenzhen folk culture exhibition will be displayed in the museum of history when it is completed.
