The earthly remains of Nurhaci, the first emperor of the Manchu state, rest in Fuling Tomb, which is situated in the east of Shenyang. Nurhachi's empress, Xiaoci Gao Yehenala is buried with him, in this large complex of tombs, stretched over an area of 48 acres. It is on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites, and is one of the most perfectly preserved tombs from this era. The tombs are smaller than the Northern Tomb, but is known for stone steps depicting 72 devils and the 36 heavenly gods which dominated the spiritual landscape of Nurhachi and his people.
