Description

A Ming Dynasty official named Pan Yudan started to build this stunning garden in 1577, so his parents would have some nice surroundings to wander in their retirement. It is said that it cost him 20 years, and all his savings, to complete his labor of love. Located to the northeast of the Bund, such is this garden's beauty that it lures visitors from home and abroad all year round.

Skilled landscapers made the most of the space that they had, and the garden actually appears much larger than it is. Its pavilions, pagodas and winding paths provide a charming environment for a stroll. The woodcarvings and brick engravings that adorn the garden reflect the style of southern China in the Ming and Qing dynasties.

There are 30 scenic spots scattered around the garden, but the most popular six include the Five-dragon Wall: Sansui Hall, the Ten-Thousand-Flower Pavilion, the Hall of Heralding Spring, the Hall of Magnificent Jade, the Inner Garden and Huijing Hall.
