Description

This Catholic church was first built in 1863, but it was razed to the ground during the Taiping Rebellion. At one point in its history, it attracted devout pilgrims from all over Asia. Rebuilt from 1925 to 1935, the cathedral's Baroque domes and Gothic interior make for a very impressive sight. During the Cultural Revolution, She Shan Cathedral sustained heavy damage, and many of its beautiful stained glass windows and statues were destroyed. The cathedral has since been gradually restored to its former glory, and is a must-see on the Shanghai tourist circiut.
