Upscale New Zealand espresso boutique is now brewing in Shanghai.
Fuel’s Hong Kong branch won the Time Out Hong Kong Dining Award in 2009 for best cafe. Founded by Sanjay Ponnapa, the descendant of Indian coffee planters, Fuel sources its secret blend of beans from three continents and roasts them in New Zealand using northern Italian techniques.
Dark wood panelling and chestnut leather stools outfit the space, exuding a sleek masculinity that recalls a cigar lounge. A neat row of vintage soul album covers behind the counter, combined with a globe and stacks of newspapers against one wall, simultaneously evoke an intellectual’s man-cave. Behind the counter are all sorts of fancy coffee equipment - scientific-looking glass and metal instruments. Together with the jazz soundtrack, efficient service and top-notch coffee, the experience radiates understated luxury.
