Jiming Temple [鸡鸣寺]

Large View

Description

Though Jiming Temple is often held up as a shining example of China's religious architecture, all of the buildings currently within the temple walls are no older than 1989, reconstructed after a 1973 fire devastated the compound. One of the most interesting stories associated with the temple is an incident that occurred during a Chen Dynasty-era political upheaval. To escape capture, the emperor hid in one of the temple's wells with his most beloved concubines, whose excessive face make-up washed off into the water. Since then, the well has been called ''Rouge Well'', or ''Well of Disgrace''. Now, monks run a Buddhist school here.

Open 8:00am to 4:00pm
Admission: RMB 5 for entrance. Additional RMB 2 to enter the pagoda.
