Nanjing Library, NL, is Jiangsu provincial public library, as well as one of the first-class libraries named by the Ministry of Culture. Established in 1907, it's the oldest public library in China and served as the national central library during the Republic of China. As of 2006, the library ranked number 3 of all libraries in China.

As a main storeroom for literary heritage of Jiangsu province and the whole country at large, NL houses more than 8-million collection volumes of which 1.6 million are considered ancient books, 100,000 volumes of rare Chinese books almost covering the full timeline of book history beginning with a Buddhist manuscripts of the Tang Dynasty approximately 1,400 years ago and one of the oldest prints of the Ming Dynasty which dates back to the 14th century. Besides, the exclusive collection of documents of the Republic of China, the NL prides itself with a variety of literary forms.

The new 11-story building was completed and opened to the public in 2006 in the city center on Zhongshan Donglu. The new Nanjing library boasts a large area, more reading rooms, multi-media facilities and good services.
