Description

Located at the foot of the Phoenix Mountain and on the bank of the Daxia River, the Labrang Monastery is a perfect blend of Han- and Tibetan-style temple architecture. Its white towers represent north and south China, while its halls are spread out in the shape of a crescent moon.

The Grand Sutra Hall is site of the daily religious rituals. It enshrines the statue of the Buddha, and also has an extensive library of religious literature.

The six-story Grand Golden Tile Hall has a bronze stele that is adorned with Mandarin, Tibetan, Manchu and Mongolian characters, all inscribed by Qing Dynasty

Emperor Jiaqing. The hall houses many beautiful bronze figures of Buddha created by Nepalese artisans. The monastery also has an extensive collection of Buddha statues created from a variety of materials, including ivory, sandalwood, jade, crystal and clay. Visitors will also wonder at the surrounding hills and the winding Daxia River. Visitors to the monastery in wintertime and summertime might have the opportunity to catch one of its grand festivals.

Getting There: Take the long distance bus for Xiahe County at Lanzhou West Bus Station, departing daily at 7:30, 8:30, 14:00, and 15:00 for a fare of RMB 20. Then take a taxi to the Labrang Monastery.
