Description

Three famous shrines sit in close proximity to each other on Tianzhu Hill in Hangzhou. Surrounded by lush greenery and resplendent woods, these three temples sit like diamonds placed lovingly in the crown of Tianzhu. Faxi Temple was built around 907AD-960AD and is the largest of the three. Accessible by a small mountain alley, Faxi is a perfect off-the-beaten-track destination for those who want to experience a little Buddhist tranquility without the crowds. Similar in environment and appearance to Faxi, Fajing Temple, also called "Middle Tianzhu Temple", was established in 597AD. Lower Fajing was constructed in 330AD during the Dongjing Dynasty, and is Hangzhou's only existing nunnery. Legends say that the hill itself was named "Tianzhu", an old-world word for "India", thanks to traveling Buddhist monk and scholar Huili, who took one look at the verdant foliage and exclaimed that the hill must have flown over from India.
