Description

The Pearl River in Guangzhou extends over 70 kilometers (44 miles), and the channel divides into three routes: the "front" route (which is the northernmost channel that flows west-east past the main downtown area); the "back" route, which flows southeast before swinging northeast to rejoin the main channel east of the city, and the "west" route, which splits off to join the main channel a little west of the back route.

The front route has some of the most beautiful scenery. Noteworthy sites include Shamian, Haizhu Square and White Goose Pool. Additional attractions include Aiqun Mansion, the Southern Mansion, Guangzhou Hotel, and the White Swan Hotel.

White Goose Pool - 'Night Moon over the Goose Pool' (E Tan Ye Yue)
White Goose Pool is a point on the Pearl River where the channel widens before it divides, just south of Shamian Island. Since ancient times it has been an important transportation channel and scenic vantage point.

The Pool is the venue for traditional Spring Festival and National day celebrations such as firework displays, and dragon boat races during the annual Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Festival.

Shamian Island architecture (Shan Mian Yang Fang Jian Zhu)
Shamian is a small island flanked by the Pearl River with the White Goose Pool to the south. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the island was the site for foreign warehouses, and it became a British and French concession after the Opium Wars. The old colonial-era buildings and churches, shady streets and quite gardens create a haven of quiet from the busy commercial streets of Guangzhou. There are 53 buildings which have been listed as heritage sites: because of its architectural significance, Shamian has been designated as an official Guangzhou historical attraction.

Haizhu Square (Hai Zhu Guang Chang)
Located north of Haizhu Bridge, Haizhu Square was built in 1954 and covers an area of 3.5 hectares (8.6 acres). Because of its spaciousness and pleasant landscaping as well as its political significance (a Liberation Monument was built there in 1959), the square is a popular spot with Guangzhou locals. The area is planted with different kinds of trees including banyan, ceiba, redbud and palm, and it is a good spot from which to admire the Pearl River.

Ta Ying Lou (Ta Ying Lou)
Ta Ying Lou is located on the western bank of the Pearl River. The four-story building is a fusion of Chinese and Western architecture. Its name derives from its inverted reflection in the waters of the Pearl River.

Built around 1910, it once served as the home of Chen Shaobai, a leader in the Xinhai Revolution of 1911 that overthrew the Qing Dynasty. Articles that he wrote can still be seen decorating the walls of the building, and many of his paintings, calligraphy, and personal possessions are on display.

The building has developed a 30-centimeter lean towards the northwest due to the rise and fall of the Pearl River, and is sometimes called 'the Leaning Tower of Guangzhou'.
