Description

Chen Clan Temple, often referred as the Ancestral Temple of the Chen Family and Chen Clan academy, is located in Foshan city. Li Julin designed the building during the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty. The compound was constructed in traditional Chinese style with the main entrance facing the south. The temple is best known for its superb décor that epitomizes the folk culture of Guangdong. The compound complex is comprised of 9 halls, six courtyards and nineteen buildings interconnected by corridors.

The temple has some of the finest examples of stone carving in Guangdong. Particularly striking are the stone lions on either side of the entrance doorway, as well as the stone drums, stone slabs, and stone fruits. Woodcarving skills are also on display with the images of animals, mountains and water scenes on the roof beams, girders and eaves.
