Renmin Park (southwest) [人民公园]

Large View

Description

Renmin Park is a charming example of a traditional Chinese park, and is the site of the loveliest of Chengdu's many teahouses. The large open spaces of the park are used by local Tai-Chi and martial arts experts who practice their art underneath the swaying trees and along the still lake. At night dancers come to rehearse and perform under the stars.

The park contains several gardens – the bonsai gardens are particularly popular with children, but many of the calming planted areas provide long lazy walks for visitors. Taking a pedal boat out on the lake can either be an energetic pursuit, or if visitors stop pedaling once they reach the middle it can provide a relaxing way to view the beautiful scenery. It also gives visitors an opportunity to see the locals who swim in the lake all year round. After wearing themselves out in the park, visitors can find refreshments at the park's wonderful teahouse in company with locals who go there to chat, play chess or just take a quiet hour in the shady outdoor arbor.
