Description

Wenshu Monastery is considered the best-preserved Buddhist temple in Chengdu, and is dedicated to the God of Wisdom (Manjushri). Today, the temple is famed as the home of the Buddhist Association of Sichuan Province. The temple was originally built during the Tang Dynasty, and the fine relief carvings to be seen around the temple are its greatest attraction.

The monastery displays over 400 statues of stone, iron, bronze, painted-clay and wood, in various sizes and shapes. Among them are 19 bronze statues, which were cast during the Qing Dynasty, and 10 iron statues from the Song Dynasty . The skull of Xuanzang, a Tang Dynasty monk, is still kept in the Monastery and considered the most precious object. The monastery also has a beautiful white-jade statue of Buddha from Myanmar, Sanskrit incantations on Pattra-leaves, which were brought in ancient times from India, and a Japanese gold-plated scripture cylinder of the Tang Dynasty.

There is a teahouse with adjoining vegetarian restaurant which is very popular with travelers.
