Description

The Jilin Provincial Natural Museum is a comprehensive natural history museum built in partnership between the Northeast Normal University and the Jilin Provincial Government with an exhibition space of 6,000 sq.m. There are more than 50,000 specimens in the museum, mainly reflecting the local environment and resources of Jilin. The museum opened in the summer of 2007, ensuring a modern approach to the exhibits, many of which are interactive.

There are four exhibition areas in the museum: Changbai Forest, Butterfly Valley, Rare Animals and Palaeontology. The Changbai Forest exhibition introduces the legends of Tianchi and demonstrates the change of seasons experienced on the mountain through various displays and videos. Over 700 species of butterfly are on display in Butterfly Valley, but those who like their wildlife bigger and scarier should head to the Rare Animal Exhibition area, where models of northeast tigers, boars, black bears, pandas, ostriches and red-crowned cranes are displayed. The palaeontological area has the only complete fossil of a “primitive cow “ in Asia dating from between 10,000 to 400,000 BC.
