Despite the over-priced bottled beers and poorly made food and drinks, basking on a rooftop in the shadow of the imposing imperial Drum and Bell towers is a great way to while away many hours in quiet conversation. An unpretentious spot favored by European expats during the summer months, Drum and Bell, despite its shortcomings, has location and ambiance to spare.

I have to say I have a mixed feeling about this place. It's great when it's quiet and you can sit and have a good conversation on the rooftop, though like most others I'm sure, I go on Sunday for it's 50 RMB open bar. Gets a bit hectic and I feel awful for the skeleton team of waiters/waitresses that have to run around all over the place serving demanding and impatient foreigners. Still, good on a weekday evening.
